Tainted Grail: The Great Escape
Tainted Grail: Fall of Avalon is a dark fantasy RPG inspired by the acclaimed Tainted Grail board game. The game blends immersive storytelling with challenging exploration, making it a solid choice for fans of traditional RPGs and Soulslike experiences such as Oblivion or Dark Souls. Despite being relatively new, the game shows promise with its deep lore, atmospheric world, and solid quest design.
If you are not a beginner and have completed the first quest, then I invite you to our advanced guide. Start with the levelling system in Tainted Grail to understand what each level gives. Also, learn about skills and attributes.
One of the key early quests, "The Great Escape," kicks off your journey. In this mission, a mysterious knight appears and frees you from a dungeon cell, instructing you to meet him on the beach outside. The quest acts as a tutorial, introducing core mechanics and setting the stage for the unfolding narrative

1. Waking in the Dungeon.
In the wake of character creation and difficulty choice, your journey commences. You wake in a dark prison cell where a guard questions you. Your responses to the questions shape your character’s past, which in turn will play a role in how NPCs will see you later. The interrogation is broken up by an arrow, which kills the guard. In walks a mysterious cloaked knight for a brief appearance, he hands you a jail key and sends you to the left before vanishing into the shadows.

2. Optional to go for Early Loot and Exploration.
Before you go left, head right into a side path. This leads to a small room which has early game gear and some valuables. In there, you’ll find a book named Beautiful Liliana in the Chamber of Ecstasy, a Red Priest who drops a Guard’s Key, some coins, Linen Pants, Torn Red Shield’s Leather Armour, and Worn Leather Boots. Also, a Broken Wooden Club, which is your first basic weapon.
In a cabinet, you will find groats, oats, flour, and also some lockpicks. Additionally, there is a second locked cabinet that you can open to obtain potions and coins. Also of great importance is to collect the Menhir Figurine, which is on top of this cabinet it permanently raises your max health by 5.

3. Opening Cells and First Battle Encountered.
Return to the main path with the Jail Key, which you may use to open other cells. In one of the cells is a broken wall, which in turn reveals a Red Priest that will put you through a combat tutorial. This short fight is a lesson in parrying and stamina. Speaking of stamina, can you brew potions in the Tainted Grail to restore health, for example? In addition to potions, it is also possible to craft poison.
An Unliving which breaks free from a prison cell. Defeating it will add the creature to your Bestiary. In the cell, you’ll also find 2 more Unliving as well as loot, which is a strong incentive for early exploration.

4. Secret Room and Torture Chamber.
Nearby a pickaxe which you may use to break into a damaged wall that leads to a hidden chamber. In this room, you will find two Red Priests and the optional NPC Brother Syrius. Further, we have a torture chamber which holds a man named Ninian. You may choose to kill him and take the unique Ninian’s Tag, which plays a part in the story later.
In some areas, you will find a Red Priest’s body, which has in hand a Laboratory Key that opens a different locked room. Also in a right-hand passage, which is near a stairway, you meet Conchur, another NPC who adds to the background lore.

5. Encountering Caradoc and the Wailing Effigy.
As you go deeper into the dungeon, you will meet Caradoc, the knight who rescued you. He confirms your path out and reports that he will be waiting for you on the beach.
Before you go out, use the Guard’s Key, which will open a basement door. There is a cutscene that introduces the Wailing Effigy, a hard mini-boss. Defeat it to get great gear which includes the Notes of a Man Sinking into Despair, a Dull Broadsword, and Grief-Torn Armour.
6. Side Affairs and NPC Sirja.
As you make your way back up, take note of the small opening in the wall. Through it you will find Sirja, an NPC that will present you with a Lesser Mana Ring +10 Max Mana in trade for a Small Health Potion. Also, note that she will be included in your Journal, which will be handy for the future.
Nearby is a sealed door which has a group of dead bodies by it. With a lockpick, you may open it to access a new area of the dungeon, which features a jail cell and also the Frantic Berserker, which is a very strong enemy. After a cinematic presentation, you will defeat him in you will get out of the valuable items like Athlete’s Pride and the Thorn Helmet.
7. Ascending to the Exit and Meeting Arthur.
When you are ready, go to the place Caradoc sent you to. Use the lift by Sirja’s location to go up and then into a narrow passage. You will run into another Tainted Red Priest that to must defeat. Once that is done, head out to the scaffolding for what supplies you can find and make your way to a bridge. Also note a machine nearby which won’t work at this time, you’ll have to proceed.
Down the left stairs go, defeat that which is a Red Priest also, and to a glowing statue you come. This statue, when interacted with, takes you into the Wyrdness Realm, a dream world of glowing orbs and ethereal visions.

8. Journey Through the Wyrdness Realm
Follow the glowing orbs through several eerie environments, including a burning village where you’ll fight weak enemies known as Red Death Infected. The path is linear, and each orb brings you closer to the final revelation.
At the end, you’ll find a massive blood altar. Interacting with it summons the spirit of Arthur Pendragon, who reveals he was once the great king of mankind. He is now only a remnant, and by awakening him, you’ve bonded with his soul. He offers to help you, unlocking your Wyrdness Powers and the main quest, A World To Win.
9. Gaining Arthur’s Power and Escaping
You awaken back in the dungeon in a new area blocked by vines. Loot the nearby corpse for a Ring of Protection, then interact with the ancient mechanism using your Soul Fragment to clear the vines and return to the earlier bridge.
Cross the bridge, and a crystal erupts, summoning the Giant Sentinel. A tutorial explains how to channel Arthur’s power using Soul Fragments. Defeating this boss rewards you with a Ring of Toughness, increasing your Encumbrance Limit by 25.

10. Final Encounter with Caradoc
Shortly after, a portal transports you outside the dungeon near the shore. Explore a bit northeast to find an altar with an Essence of the Wind, a short-term speed boost item.
Follow the shoreline to meet Caradoc once more. He inquires about your journey. If you mention finding King Arthur, he becomes alarmed and reveals that he was tasked with preventing Arthur’s soul from returning. Believing you are now a threat, he attacks in a scripted boss fight that you cannot win. After defeating you, Caradoc uses magic to sever your bond with Arthur, warning you never to let this power rise again.

11. Rest and Departure
You awaken to a new mechanic: the bonfire system, which allows you to rest and recover. After resting, approach the boat nearby and set sail. This ends the quest and begins your new journey.

Quest Completion and Rewards
Once you set sail, The Great Escape is officially completed. You receive the Safe Conduct Pass and unlock two new main story quests:
- A World To Win (related to King Arthur’s influence)
- Shadow of the Horns (your path toward the wider world)
I hope you found some useful discoveries here that made your journey easier. From now on, the undead shall not rest, and the parasite’s hunger will brush against your back like a cold breath. Many challenges still lie ahead in your quest to restore power and light to these lands. Good luck to you!
