Worlds 2023 LoL - Group StageWelcome to EGamersWorld.
We continue our look at the group stage of Worlds 2023, the centrepiece tournament of the year in League of Legends and arguably the most important event in esports as a whole.
We look at the confrontations in the group stage with the Swiss system. We're talking about the 1-0 basket, where the G2 Esports - Weibo Gaming matchup awaits us.
G2 - Weibo should be one of the most colourful matches. Yes, we have T1 - Gen.G and JDG - BLG, however, it is "Samurai" and Weibo that causes the incorruptible The International heresy.
The fact is that G2 became the first Western team in the group stage of Worlds 2023 to manage to outplay an Eastern competitor. Weibo, on the other hand, demonstrated a real masterclass in "smothering" the opponent.
We're trying to figure out who will be stronger in the G2 vs Weibo match and earn their second win at Worlds 2023, and who will be destined to go to the 1-1 basket, where it will be one of the T1/Gen.G and JDG/Bilibili pairs.
Let's go.
Weibo Gaming Form
We open the match breakdown with an analysis of Weibo Gaming's form. In this match, the club from the LPL, by good tradition, acts in the status of the favourite.
Weibo Gaming can be called a newcomer to the LPL, as the club appeared on the eSports radar and the big stage in 2021, and debuted in the LPL in 2022.
As a rookie, the results were very good. Weibo made the top 8 twice in 2022, finishing top 6 at LPL Spring 2022 and top 8 at LPL Summer 2022.
At the last tournament played before LPL Summer 2023, the previous LPL Spring 2023 split, the team again finished in the top 6. It's not surprising, as the club has a great roster.
- Weibo Gaming roster: TneShy, weiwei, Xiaohu, Light, Crisp .
Weibo Gaming very confidently entered the play-offs of the championship. In the group stage of LPL Summer 2023 the team played on the score 10-6, which allowed to take the sixth place.
Weibo's first opponent in the play-offs was Ninjas in Pyjamas, who made a great run through the group stage and then surprised in the play-offs, reaching the top 8. But obviously they couldn't win, with Weibo winning 3-1.
Weibo's next opponent in the LPL Summer 2023 play-offs was LNG Esports, who showed top flight performance in the regular season, reaching the top 2 of the league and almost beating JD Gaming in the finals. Nevertheless, it was Weibo LNG that LNG had to deal with in the play-offs, and that match ended with the score 2-3 not in favour of WG.
In the regional finals Weibo started their performance from the lower grid, where their opponent was TES. A willful 3-2 win was a key argument in favour of Weibo's advantage in this match.
Next up, Weibo played against EDG for a slot at Worlds 2023. WBG played quite a game and ended up shutting out EDward with a 3-1 score, earning a place at Worlds 2023.
In the opening match at Worlds 2023, Weibo Gaming faced off against NRG. The match ended exactly as it was supposed to be: absolute annihilation of the first team of America and an easy victory for Weio.
Weibo Gaming's most popular champions
Weibo Gaming isn't known for diversity in the top lineup. TheShy plays KSante (10 games, 8 wins), Gnar (6 matches, 50% wins). Sion (2 matches, 100% wins) and Renekton (2 matches, 50% wins) make rare appearances.
The ubiquitous Maokai is ignored in the forest (appeared only once and lost). But Vi (6 games, 100% wins), Elise (6 games, 60% wins), Sejuani (4 games, 75% wins) get quite a lot of attention.
The centre line is occupied by Syndra (7 games, 85% wins), Ryze (4 games, 0% wins), Talliyah (3 games, 66% wins).
From shooters like Lucian (5 matches, 80% wins), Varus (4 games, 75% wins), Zeri, Sivir and Caitlyn appeared 3 times each and only Sivir didn't win a single game.
Sapports: Nami (7 matches, 85% wins), Ashe (4 matches, 50% wins), Yummi (3 matches, 33% wins).
G2 Esports Form
At the beginning of the season, the Samurai made their way to the UK capital to take part in MSI 2023 by winning the LEC Winter draw. Then G2 made it to the Grand Final without much trouble, also beating MAD Lions quite easily
At LEC Spring 2023, G2 Esports played worse. They entered the play-offs of the tournament from the second match of their group, making it to the bottom of the play-offs. While there, they played against the Lions again, but were unable to repeat the success of the LEC Spring 2023: G2 Esports dropped out of the LEC Spring 2023 playoffs, but made it to the Mid-Season Invitational 2023.
- G2 Esports roster: BrokenBlade, Yike, Caps, Hans Sama, Mikyx.
Play-In for G2 Esports is successful and even easier than BLG's. G2 Esports didn't feel LOUD and easily shut down PSG Talon, beating both clubs 2-0.
Things were no longer as rosy in the Bracket Stage. In the first round, G2 Esports played Gen.G, probably the main contender for the championship title, and managed to take a card from them, which in the realities of today's competitive scene is more than good.
In the bottom set, G2 Esports met their main rival, MAD Lions. The European derby on the international stage ended with a confident victory for G2, confirming them as the best team in the LEC.
At the end of the only international event so far, G2 Esports finished in the top 6. The result is a good one.
Before the LEC Finals, the Samurai took another trophy to their headquarters. It was the trophy for the victory at LEC Summer 2023, where G2 easily defeated EXCEL in the Grand Final.
In the first round of LEC Finals 2023, G2 Esports played against Team BDS. The French gave a fight, but failed to pull more than 1 map.
G2 Esports had no problems first with MAD Lions to advance to the grand finals of LEC Finals 2023, and then in the finals they defeated Fnatic.
In the first match on the main stage of the year, G2 Esports played against Dplus. Being an outsider, the team managed to beat the titular Koreans, all thanks to Hans Sama's crowning Draven
G2 Esports' most popular champions
Gragas (3 matches, 66% wins) is sent to the top line.
In the forest, either Belveth (2 matches, 100% wins) or Maokai (2 games, 50% wins) or Gragas (2 matches, 50% wins).
On the centre line variety: Yasuo, Sylass, Cassiopeia, Sejuani and Yone have appeared in spades once each and won their game.
Of the shooters, Draven (3 matches, 66% wins) is playing.
On Support Nautilus (2 matches, 50% wins), Nami (2 matches, 50% wins).
History of head-to-head meetings
Previously the teams have not played each other in official matches. This match will be the debut match between the sides.
Predicted result of the match G2 Esports - Weibo Gaming at Worlds 2023
Choosing a winner in this match is not an easy task. Both teams showed a great game in the first round, but the level of opponents was, to put it mildly, different. If the game was played Bo3, I would bet on the total +2.5, but here we have to choose the winner. Let it be G2, because someone from the West needs to keep the brand.
Bottom line: G2 wins.
