The first day of the playoffs stage of a major Counter-Strike 2 tournament in China has come to an end. On this day, there were two best of 3 matches in the quarterfinals. Virtus.pro faced off against G2 Esports in a match that was crucial for both teams. VP aimed to get revenge for their disappointing loss at the last major. The second pair of teams were FaZe Clan and Team Liquid, where Twistzz from Team Liquid clearly wanted to make an impression against his former teammates from FaZe Clan.

Results of the first day of the playoffs of IEM Chengdu 2024:

G2 Esports vs Virtus.pro

  • 1. G2 removed Mirage
  • 2. Virtus.pro removed Nuke
  • 3. G2 picked Anubis
  • 4. Virtus.pro picked Overpass
  • 5. G2 removed Ancient
  • 6. Virtus.pro removed Vertigo
  • 7. Inferno was left over

On the map Anubis, Virtus.pro showed a mediocre attack, leading to a one-sided half in favor of G2 Esports with a score of 9:3. Virtus.pro couldn't stage an incredible comeback on defense and moved on to the map Overpass.

On the second map, Virtus.pro started with a decent streak of rounds, at one point leading 6:1. However, G2 Esports rallied at a crucial moment and ended the half tied at 6:6. In the second half, Virtus.pro managed to win the pistol round somewhat luckily, preventing G2 Esports from even planting the bomb. NiKo and his team unexpectedly forced a buy and won the round. The game then proceeded at a fast pace, with G2 exploiting Virtus.pro's defensive weaknesses to their advantage, winning the second map with a score of 13:10.

FaZe Clan vs Team Liquid

  • 1. FaZe removed Ancient
  • 2. Liquid removed Vertigo
  • 3. FaZe picked Nuke
  • 4. Liquid picked Anubis
  • 5. FaZe removed Inferno
  • 6. Liquid removed Overpass
  • 7. Mirage was left over

The results on the Nuke map were somewhat shocking. FaZe Clan won the first half with a score of 9:3 while playing the weaker attacking side. However, it was too early to count Twistzz and his team out; they displayed a strong attack and pushed the game into overtime, where unfortunately, they ran out of steam, losing 16:13 in favor of FaZe Clan.

On Anubis, there was an intense battle between the two teams. Initially, Team Liquid managed to secure a comfortable 5 rounds on defense, and then they showcased a decent attack, which was enough to finish the map in regulation time with a close score of 13:11.

On the deciding map, Mirage, Team Liquid tried to replicate their success from the Nuke map. Being on the attack and trailing 12:6, they managed to win a series of four rounds. However, FaZe Clan learned from their mistakes and closed out the map in regulation time.
